Weekly Wisdom #18

Dear Gobies,

Great job this weekend, once again we held our seed at a tournament – proving that Case is still an ultimate force to be reckoned with.  Congrats to our Offensive and Defense MVPs – Stalin’ and Bolte, and also to everyone else for having a quality tournament.

If you’ll recall…at the beginning of the year, we established a set of Goby Standards (what we expect from each Goby) and Goby Focus Points (what the whole team should be working on).  Refer to Weekly Wisdom #10.

The third thing that we mentioned were Goby Objectives, which are individual goals that you should be making and working to achieve throughout the year.  Now that everyone has been to a few tournaments, you should be able to recognize what level of skill you are at, and also where you might want to be.  In order to get to that level, you should be setting long term objectives for yourself – specific things that you want to master by the end of the year, and also short term goals that will help you get to that point.

For example, if, by the end of the year you want to see yourself as defensive machine, some of the shorter term things you can focus on are: becoming a more active mark, reading a huck, when to poach off of the person you’re guarding, circle defense on the mark.  If, come spring, you want to be a solid handler, some smaller goals you can set are: faking and pivoting, break throws, OI and IO throws, how and when to make dump cuts.  You can work on those shorter term goals on a weekly basis and, hopefully by the end of the year you will have reached that longer term objective.

Start thinking about this stuff, and we will be contact with you about where you think you might want to be and what it will take to get to that point – both from yourselves and from your captains.

See everyone on Wednesday,

Noel & Libby
