College Ultimate Infrastructure

This week's WW is coming to you hot off the press, as USA Ultimate has recently released college boundary changes for the 2011 series.  The infrastructure behind a sport is important for every athlete and every fan to know.

In the past - the country was divided up into Regions, which was then divided up into Sections - all of which were based only on geographic size.  Our section (East Plains Section) consisted of all schools in Ohio, West Virginia, and Kentucky.  Our region (Great Lakes Region) also included Illinois, Indiana, Michigan.

USA Ultimate has made the following changes to the series:
  • No more Sectionals.
    • There are now Conferences, which are divided up according to school size.
    • There are Division I and Division III Conferences.  We're DI (student population>7500 )
    • We are Conference 1 in our region.
  • New region boundaries.
    • We are now in Region 8, with the rest of Ohio, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia.
  • Regionals bids
    • Each Conference winner gets a bid to Regionals, along with a certain number of strength bids, which are determined based on the results of the regular season.
  • Nationals bids
    • 1 per region, plus 10 strength bids.
There are also a few more minor changes that are made, so definitely read up in more detail on the USA Ultimate website.

Have a nice, frisbee-filled week!  Also, watch this video.
